What does Drama offer the Young?

Drama is an energetic and enjoyable way for children to build confidence, improve language, communication and social skills and to work well with others in a positive, supportive and safe environment. Through Drama, young people are encouraged to unlock their unique abilities and creativity and to consider and comment on the world around them.

DramaTrain reaches beyond the normal after-school clubs and extends the opportunity for students to develop their acting and audition technique for both stage and screen, whilst also offering the opportunity for students to audition for short film and theatre productions.

DramaTrain classes create a safe, positive and encouraging environment for young people to explore the world through acting and learn the skills required to act both on stage and screen. Confidence and ability are nurtured through drama, with stimulating sessions packed with fun games, challenging exercises and exciting performance opportunities.

Are there DramaTrain Stage shows?

YES! We regularly produce live stage shows and short films and all DramaTrain members have the chance to audition. We believe in seperating 'process' (regular Drama sessions and workshops) from 'product' (film and theatre productions intended for an audience to see). This seperation allows our students to learn the required Drama skills in workshops and sessions and then, when they are willing and able to do so, they can put their skills into practice by performing on stage and screen.

Are there DramaTrain Movies?

YES! We regularly produce short digital films and live stage shows.

What's the DramaTrain philosophy?

DramaTrain is dedicated to providing quality part-time performing arts training and experience. Every week our students build their skills in sessions held of an evening, weekend or during school and college holidays.

DramaTrain combines the performing arts of a drama school and of a film and television school. We cover all drama forms and performance techniques - from theatre and radio, to film, television, improvisation, cabaret and stand-up comedy. The many disciplines of stage and screen drama are combined into one exciting, safe yet challenging environment, which encourages creativity whilst stretching the imagination.

How does DramaTrain Train Actors?

Every student actively participates in all sessions. Whether performing or watching others perform, our students remain actively engaged. Each Acting class can be divided into three basic components:

1 WARM-UP - during which we 'break the ice' and warm-up the students' body (developing physical awareness); voice (developing articulation) and mind (developing communications skills.)

2. WORKSHOP - during which we introduce and begin to explore a key principle of acting (such as improvisation; script-work; audition technique; mask-work; mime; physical theatre etc etc.) Lessons focus on LEARNING BY DOING, so students are encouraged to try-out new skills, explore, experiment and work together in small groups to discover and develop new techniques as they are introduced.

3. PERFORMANCE - sessions usually culminate in a 'performance' which uses the skills introduced during the class. Students usually perform to one another in small groups and this mutually supportive atmosphere in which constructive criticism and feedback are encouraged helps to reduce inhibitions.and build group and individual confidence.

What's the DramaTrain vision?

Our vision is to be New Zealand's leading part-time performing arts training school for actors, writers and directors.

We want to encourage and develop creativity in every student and provide them with the skills of their craft so that they can enjoy them and tell effectively the stories of Aotearoa and beyond.

Our tutors are practising theatre and screen professionals and excel in creating a stimulating and supportive learning environment.  Drawing upon a wealth of expertise and collaborative talent, we use a process of experiential learning. This 'learning by doing' approach to stage and screen skills development, led by professional industry practitioners, in a fun, energetic and positive environment is what  we believe makes DramaTrain so unique.
